About
JconnectLA, in support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles’s “Fed Up With Hunger” campaign, and in collaboration with corporate sponsors, community organizations and bike enthusiast groups, is organizing a “New Moon Century.” This “Metric Century” 100 kilometer (62 mile), and 57.96 kilometer (36 mile) bike-ride will be held on Oct. 10th, 2010, bringing together riders from all over Southern California to raise awareness and funds for hunger and environmental causes.
Celebrating the New Moon, over one hundred riders will ride off into the morning mist of the Santa Monica wilderness, traversing valleys and mountains and down along the picturesque Malibu coast. Our team of riding connoisseurs are crafting a route that will be tantalizing to the senses and a perfect balance of terrain and aesthetic delight.
This years’ route will start in scenic Agoura Hills. Riders will ride into the morning mist and travel south over and thru the Santa Monica Mountain Range, down to the ocean and back into Agoura Hills. Riders will be treated to a post ride picnic and festival at the conclusion of their ride.
The price of the event is $36.00 for the 36 mile ride, and $45.00 for the metric century ride. These prices will remain in effect until the day before the ride. The cost of the ride will go up by $5.00 for each event on the day of the event. Riders will be able to raise additional funds for our causes through ride-sponsorships.
This event is open to all ages and riding skill levels, however it is a course designed for the intermediate and advanced level riders. Riders of a beginning skill level are welcome and encouraged to ride!
This ride is a kosher/vegetarian cycling event, the first of its kind in Los Angeles!
In our first year we were very excited to have a beautiful route planned through Calabasas, Oak Park, and even a bit of Ventura County! The route traversed through lakes, canyons, countryside, beaches, and even Southern California farms. This years’ event will boast a similar route, with spectacular ocean views, challenging terrain and beautiful scenery. Come see the diverse and beautiful scenery California has to offer by bicycle!
Come join cyclists from all over Southern California for this second annual event that will transform the way you look at Los Angeles… and cycling!
The Route
This years route will start in scenic Agoura Hills. Riders will ride into the morning mist as you travel south over and thru the Santa Monica Mountain Range, down to the ocean and back into Agoura Hills.
At this time, JConnectLA and the event team are still working on obtaining permits and putting together a challenging, tantalizing, and scenic route with spectacular mountain and ocean views. Check back often as updates will occur regularly.
Ride Support
This is a fully supported event. There will be checkpoints stocked with food and water throughout the course for anyone registered with the ride. We will have SAG vehicles patrolling the course for any mechanical needs the riders have, as well as transportation to the finish line for those who need it. Bring patch kits and tools for minor repairs, as it will take you less time to fix it yourself than for us to come to you. Checkpoints will not be open all day. They will be closed as the last rider passes, unless it is decided that the rider will not make it in time. At that point, the will then be picked up by the SAG vehicle.
A kosher/vegetarian brunch will be served at the conclusion of the ride. Bathrooms will be available at most of the checkpoints, but be aware that there are more restrooms at the beginning of the ride and in the strip malls and gas stations. You can use those, too! Bring two water bottles and fill them every chance you can. Take food from the checkpoints and bring it with you!
The Start
Due to JConnectLA and the event team being in the process of obtaining permits, we are unable to provide a precise start location at this time, however it will be in the Agoura Hilla area. Check back often as updates will be provided regularly.
Ride Fee
Registration for the ride is $36.00 for the 36 mile ride and $45.00 for the Metric Century ride. This price will go up by $5.00 per event on the day of the ride. Register early and save! Registration will open as soon as a start location is finalized and JConnect LA is permitted for the location.
This cost goes towards fees and permits involved in putting on the event, as well as the food and water served at the check points and brunch. Proceeds from this ride are benefiting the LA Federation’s Fed Up With Hunger Campaign, and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization committed to preserving and protecting ecosystems, habitats and endangered species.
Volunteers
Volunteers are the crucial, needed and often forgotten about worker-bees of every event, and certainly this event is no exception. We are in need of volunteers to help in every area of the event, from helping with the early morning setup, helping to make sure the event runs smoothly, helping to register participants, helping distribute water at the checkpoints, helping to set up and run the end of ride picnic, and helping to tear down… The list goes on and on. If you want to help and can help, please fill out the form on the volunteer section of the site.
You can also show up to the day of the event. There is always a job for those who want to volunteer.
We are currently looking for a Master of Ceremonies. The Master of Ceremonies is the voice of JConnectLA and the event team for the duration of the event. If you feel you can fill this important position, please fill out the form on the volunteer section of the site.
Whether you are a volunteer, spectator, or participant…
All of us at JConnectLA look forward to seeing you at the event on October 10, 2010!

Steven, Thanks for the question, I’ve been getting it a lot. There’s a total of 6,000 feet of climbing on the ride.

Hi, two corrections for you. It’s “Potrero” Road, not ‘Portero’ Road, and it’s the “Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area” not ‘Santa Monica National Park’. Also, could you please provide more detail on this part of the route: “The Century continues on Mulholland to Calabasas, doing a loop through Topanga Canyon, and back around to Los Virgenes and then North again to the start point.” Thanks.

I would like to participate, but I cannot make it at 6:30AM. Is it possible to start later, like at 8AM?
#5 by sasha on October 9th, 2009
Because it is a supported Century we will be closing checkpoints and puling support vehicles with the last riders in the group. If you start at 8am the checkpoints will most likely be closed by the time you get there, and we wont have any way of giving you support during the ride. It would be best to start with the group at the latest by 6:45am, and only if you’re fast.

This is a wonderful cause. If I were in town I’d do it. Hopefully this will be an annual ride as I’m sure the need to feed the hungry will continue. Thank you for doing this!

Hi. Is this a road ride, or does it involve dirt (farmland) and/or serious mountain riding?

The ride looks like fun, but trying to figure out best way to get there by public transit from central LA. Would it be the red line to orange line to the 161 or is there be a better way?

Hello! I’ve looked into it and asked several friends who are better at public transport than I am, but haven’t found anything more useful than what you know. On the other hand, if you can make it to East Hollywood (Melrose/Western) there is a caravan of carpooling wonders leaving from the Swarm! headquarters. You can be in touch with Matt! at MattRuscigno@gmail.com if you’d like to come! We’re leaving at 5am Sunday!
